Breaking: AHLAF Boosts Workforce Development Programs

Dear AHLA Member,

To combat the ongoing labor shortage, the AHLA Foundation is entering a formal partnership with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Job Corps – first of its kind for Job Corps and for the hospitality industry at large – to ignite the hospitality workforce.

Tell Me More: This collaboration will provide Job Corps students access to hotel jobs and AHLAF’s flagship apprenticeship program – an industry-driven, competency-based initiative that offers pathways to becoming a lodging manager or hotel cook and includes nationally recognized credential attainment.

New Resources Available: Learn more about our Empowering Youth Program – a targeted initiative that brings together hotels and local community-based organizations to train Opportunity Youth between the ages of 16-24 for careers in hospitality. As we move forward on this initiative, we have created a brand-new toolkit to help employers at the property level engage and connect with training providers and community-based organizations. Additionally, we have created several new resources to help you learn about and promote the program. This informative one-pager demonstrates how you can support your future workforce and ultimately create a road map for success.

Who Are We Helping: These programs help individuals like Asia Magee – an Empowering Youth Program student who is finishing up her training at Café Reconcile with an internship at the Sheraton and dreams of becoming an executive chef.

“Problems I may have disappear when I enter the doors…Since I’ve been here they have taught me a sense of self awareness, life skills, and helped me to communicate more effectively in the workplace.”

Get Involved: Our goal is to support Opportunity Youth training and develop graduates with a sense of purpose and the skills, tools, and opportunities to enter and advance in hospitality careers.

The AHLA Foundation relies on hotel employer engagement to bring the Empowering Youth Program to life including:

  • Guest speakers on hotel industry and career pathways
  • Hotel property tours
  • Work-based experiences
  • Mock interviews
  • Hiring fairs
